SacTown 10 Mile Race

Another day, another race. Today was the SacTown 10 Mile Race. Last year was the first time I have run this race. I really enjoyed it last year, and being an Sacramento Running Association  AmbasSRAdor this year, I thought it was only right that I run it again.

The course this year was a bit a LOT different from last year. Last year we ran through Midtown & East Sac. This year we went through Downtown and West Sac. And the course was a LOOP! I have to admit, when I realized this I wasn’t too thrilled. I have never run a race that was a loop and I thought it would be really hard, boring and repetitive. Honestly, it was the exact opposite (in my opinion). The Sacramento Running Association did a great job of making a fun and challenging course.

I have 2 more weeks until the SLO Marathon, so today was a training day for me. I ran a little over 5 miles before the race and then ran the 1o mile option – new this year was a 5 mile course. Here are the routes of my runs today:

Maybe it was the fact that I ran about 5.5 miles before this race? Whatever the reason it was a real challenge for me. My pace was an 8:20. Which is usually a breeze. I ran this race last year about a minute faster, but it felt far less challenging. And I ran the Urban Cow, which is 3.1 miles longer than this, last year with a pace of 7:54. I have also wondered if my speed has been affected by my marathon training. In 2 weeks I will be running the SLO Marathon and a week after that I will be running the OC Marathon. My training plan is based on getting me through those back to back marathons. I am not concerned about speed. I am killing it on hills though! So I think that is my trade off. Totally not used to it, and I hope this won’t make it harder for me to get faster and BQ at CIM this year.

This is Theresa. We met about 1/4 from the finish line. She ran up to me and said something about doing a great job, and we were going to finish together. She went ahead of me for just a bit, but I caught up and she grabbed my hand and told me I was doing great. How awesome is that?? As we were running down the chute and the announcer called our names she pointed at me and said, “My new friend”. She was pretty great! At the end of the race she asked me to look into joining her running club and told me what a great runner I was. That was really great to hear since I really felt like this race was a struggle.

I also want to say thank you to David and Paula (FitFam6 ). Like I said, I ran with them for a bit and they passed me but I kept them in site. My thought was if I can at least see them, I could finish this race strong. They kept me going from mile 4 to mile 9, when I finally felt strong enough to really pick it up. Thanks you two! You’re both such an inspiration to me.


Today was a great day. Since becoming a coach, an ambassador for SRA, joining a local running club…I have met so many people that I am thankful to have in my life. It is great to have  so much support! Have a great weekend everyone – what’s left of it.

    • We don’t really have hills in the city, but we do. It’s weird! And if you’re not prepared that can be hard! His did you like the corse overall?

      • I liked the course overall but it was a lot of the same course that Capital City Classic used last year and some of Shamrockin’ from 2012 so it wasn’t much of a suprise except that I’d forgotten about the hills. But I did like getting to check out all the work they’ve been doing around Rayle Field. I had a really great time and would do it again.

      • With so many races in Sac they can all get pretty repetitive. True that this was the same course as others, but for some reason it seemed pretty new to me. And I run River Walk 2-3 times a week!

      • I love the River Walk but it’s a 30 minute drive for me so I generally stick to my home area. Or occasionally I go to Garcia Bend to run on the trail there. But it’s still 30 minutes away.

  1. Nice job Haley! I just discovered the River Walk for running, while previewing the course for the Capital City Classic in a couple weeks. BTW, it great seeing you the other night! You look amazing!
